Mid-Term Reflection: What have you learned about rhetoric so far?
During the source-based essay, I was researching domestic violence against women in India. For example In the “The Growing Concern around Violence against Women in India – Where Do We Stand?” written by Kumar Das and Bijeta Mohanty. Their position and background prove that they are credible sources. The purpose of this article is to inform people around the world how many women are facing domestic violence in India. Additionally, to ask India’s government to assist those women to live a better life. As I identified the author, audience, and purpose of this article I used these rhetorical terms to analyze the article for a deeper understanding of my topic.
As I was researching and using these rhetorical terms it assisted me to organize my writing, and I was able to find important facts to convey the author’s purpose to the audience. I researched 4 different articles on the same topic and I was able to connect information between those articles because of the knowledge of rhetorical terms. I connected 2 of the articles that had the same purpose for the audience. For example in the “One in Three Women in India Subject to Domestic Abuse, Study Finds.” the purpose was to spread awareness of violence against women and to the economy of India. Additionally, In the “One in Three Women in India Subject to Domestic Abuse, Study Finds.” The purpose of this article was to raise awareness about the injustices that are going on in a country like India and how women are exploited by men in society by either physical, mental, or sexual abuse, especially in Lockdown. Both of these articles have the similarity and same purpose but they also contain very different information too. What I did was regenerate the information to provide a brief context for a clear understanding of the purpose with the facts that the authors stated in the article.
First I have learned about the rhetoric terms like author, audience, purpose, genre, etc. Later on, I learned how to apply them even though I haven’t done any rhetorical situational writing paper by using this term. However, I figured out how to use these terms from my research articles. In high school, I have only used thesis, evidence, and analysis for my research essay. In CCNY I learned how to find the purpose of the author in an article, who the audience is, the author’s tone to communicate with his/her audience, and what genre is used to communicate, etc. These terms helped me to understand the text more deeply than ever before. These rhetoric terms improved my writing function in social contexts. Overall, these rhetorical terms will help me in the future to improve my writing, to organize, and to have created for any writing context.
